What Counts as a Roof Emergency

Not every roof problem needs someone on the roof today, and knowing the difference saves money. A roof emergency is water entering the building now, or damage that will let water in before the work could be booked as an ordinary repair.

Active water entry is the clearest case. So is an opening in the roof: shingles or tiles gone, underlayment torn, a puncture through the decking, or flashing pulled away from a wall. Once the covering is breached, the deck and the framing underneath start taking damage too, and what began as a covering repair turns into a structural one.

Some things look alarming and are not urgent. A single cracked tile in dry weather, a ceiling stain that has been there for months and is dry to the touch, or granules collecting in a gutter all deserve an inspection, but they can wait for a normal appointment.

How We Handle an Urgent Call

The goal on the first visit is to stop the water and establish what failed. The permanent repair follows once the roof is protected and the full extent is known.

Find the entry point

We inspect the roof, the flashings, and where it is safe to access, the attic side. Water rarely enters the roof where it appears on the ceiling, which is why leak repair starts with tracing it back.

Temporary covering, sealing, or a tarp over the opening, so the building is protected while the full repair is planned and priced.

What To Do While You Wait

These steps limit the damage and help your claim. None of them involve going onto the roof, and none of them should.

  • Move what you can: Furniture, electronics, and anything with sentimental value, out from under the leak.
  • Contain the water: A bucket or bin under the drip, with a towel in the bottom to stop it splashing out.
  • Relieve a bulging ceiling: A small hole at the lowest point of a sagging drywall bulge lets the water out in one controlled place instead of bringing the ceiling down.
  • Kill the power: If water is anywhere near light fittings or outlets, switch off the circuits serving that area at the breaker.
  • Photograph everything: The ceiling, the walls, the floor, the contents, and the roof from the ground. Date-stamped photos carry weight with an insurer.
  • Note when it started: The date, the time, and the weather at the time. Insurers ask, and memory fades.
  • Clear the floor below: Roll up rugs, lift furniture legs onto blocks, and get anything porous off a wet floor before it wicks.
  • Stay off the roof: A wet roof is slick, and a damaged roof may not hold weight. Look from the ground and leave the rest to us.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency roof repair?

No. We are open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and we are closed Sunday. What we do is move urgent jobs to the front of the schedule within those hours, so an active leak is not queued behind routine appointments. If you call outside our hours, leave a message with the property address and what the roof is doing, and it is in front of us when we open. What counts as a roof emergency?

Water entering the building now, or damage that will let water in before ordinary repair work could be scheduled. That includes shingles or tiles blown off, a puncture through the roof covering or decking, flashing pulled away from a wall or chimney, a split seam on a flat roof, and any sagging or soft decking that makes the roof unsafe. A cracked tile in dry weather or an old dry ceiling stain still deserves an inspection, but it is not an emergency.

Can you cover my roof temporarily?

Yes. Where the roof covering has been breached, the first step is usually temporary weatherproofing: a tarp, a patch, or sealing over the opening so the building is protected while the full repair is planned and priced. It is not a repair, and it is not meant to last, but it stops the damage spreading into the deck, the insulation, and the ceilings below.

Should I go up and look at the roof myself?

No. A wet roof is slick and a damaged roof may not hold your weight, and storm damage is not always visible from on top of it anyway. Photograph what you can see from the ground, note where the water is showing inside, and let us do the inspection with the right equipment.

Will my insurance pay for emergency roof repair?

That is between you and your insurer, and it usually turns on the cause. Sudden damage from a storm, wind, or an impact is more often covered than deterioration that built up over years, but every policy is written differently. What we can do is give you the documentation a claim needs: dated photographs, a written scope of the damage, and an itemized estimate. Report it to your insurer as soon as you can, because most policies require prompt notice and reasonable steps to prevent further damage.
